William Benton, a rich British landowner and cattle baron was murdered, creating one of the most bizarre and sensational international scandals in history. Thomas Canning, an inexperienced photo journalist from London, is sent to Mexico seeking fame and glory but eventually he reaches the camp of Pancho Villa to be told several conflicting versions of Benton's murder.
Florida, 1830 - Of all eastern Native American tribes, only the Seminoles have resisted being moved to reservations. Having retreated to Florida, they live a simple horticultural life. But white plantation owners, angry at the increasing numbers of black slaves fleeing to Seminole protection, want to take their land. Plantation owner Raynes, in particular, has convinced the military to wipe out the Seminoles. His rival Moore, a sawmill owner from the North who has a Seminole wife, is against slavery and considers it unprofitable. They decide to stop a stagecoach and force the driver to transport them, but the posse returns and they are trapped in the station with the passenger. They realize that the men are not deputies and have no intention to bring them to justice but take the stolen gold.
